Adjustment DisorderAccording to the 2007 Annual Report from the Utah Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, adjustment disorder is the third most commonly treated diagnoses in Utah public mental health centers for individuals 17 years old and under.
Adjustment Disorder* is a severe and impairing reaction to a life stressor or difficult event. Adjustment Disorder effects a person’s emotions and behaviors in a manner that significantly impairs their ability to function in their social or occupational environments.
This is more than the common stress or struggles associated with change in a person’s life. Adjustment Disorder does not apply when the symptoms are a result of bereavement.
Symptoms occur within three months of a stressor and do not persist for longer than 6 months.
Symptoms may include:
- depressed moood
- anxiety
- disturbance of conduct
- disturbance of emotions
